Why pet portraits? A note from the artist:
"I created my first pet portrait shortly after my cat, Gavin, passed away. It was like losing my best friend and family all in one; I was devastated. I picked up a dip pen and painted his face over and over again in Carmine Red on various sized sheets of glass. Looking back, I realize it was a way of processing my grief. At the urging of others, I decided to focus my business on creating custom pet portraits with the hope of providing the same healing comfort to others by honoring the bond between human and their beloved pet through a work of art."
What is Ceridwen?
Ceridwen (pronounced "ke-rid-wen") is a Welsh name that means "fair, blessed poetry." The name has ancient Celtic origins and is associated with artistic expression and spiritual significance. Ceridwen is also the Welsh goddess of rebirth, inspiration, and transformation.
Originally from Western New York, Bridget studied fine art and graphic design in college before being accepted into a specialized program geared towards computer animation, specifically for the film industry. This led to an illustrious career as a visual effects compositor, spanning decades while crossing the globe to live and work in London, Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, the Gold Coast in Australia and Wellington, New Zealand. Working for the top visual effects studios in the world, Bridget has dozens of noteworthy film credits to her name including Harry Potter’s Order of the Phoenix, The Dark Knight, Quantum of Solace, the Hobbit Trilogy, Bohemian Rhapsody, Solo, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Deadpool 3 to name a few.
As much as Bridget enjoyed the travel and working in the entertainment industry, she decided it was time to step away from the computer and the long hours for awhile and learn a new trade; something still creative but using her hands. In 2019, Bridget apprenticed with Fran Matusak of Jacob’s Stained Glass in Buffalo, NY, absorbing over 40 years of Fran’s knowledge - the kind of things you can’t find in a book - and learned the intricacies of leaded glass work. She went on to open her own small business, Abeille Glassworks, restoring, repairing, designing and building stained glass windows for churches and residential homes in the Western New York region. In addition, she taught both private and group classes in stained glass. While Bridget came to appreciate the craftsmanship involved in building leaded windows, she realized that she still needed something more fulfilling and creative.
Bridget started mixing back in the occasional film contract with her stained glass commissions and continued her studies. Workshops at conferences of the SGAA and the AGG in addition to courses at the Creative Glass Guild in Bristol, UK and the Corning Museum in Corning, NY sparked a fire. This eventually led to her discovery of her true passion in glass fusing. Bridget went on to study under Sister Ann Kelly, Tim Carey, Narcissus Quagliata, and Derek Hunt before opening Ceridwen Glass in Denver, CO in 2023.
Through her work, Bridget aims to invoke emotion in the viewer, focusing on themes she holds dear, such as renewal and transformation. She achieves this by creating elements in glass using a variety of methods such as glass painting with enamels and vitreous paints, screen printing on glass, and powder painting, then layers and fuses these various elements together much the same way she layered elements on the computer for visual effects. Often, Bridget will explore one image, experimenting with a variety of colors, layering & style, much in the same way she would approach creating a visual effects shot for film.
After the passing of her beloved cat in 2023, Bridget began doing a series of pet portraits in glass, with an aim to capture the spirit and personality of her subjects. With a never ending thirst for knowledge, Bridget is also currently experimenting with mosaic sculptures with an eye on public art projects for the future. She is available for commissioned work.
She currently resides in Lakewood, CO with her 16 year old Maine Coon, Romeo.
